The big history of B&Q
DIY is a home improvement retailing e-commerce of B&Q, which was originally established in 1969. B&Q is a multinational DIY company owning over 300 shops across and the United Kingdom and Ireland with over 40,000 products. B&Q is a wholly subsidiary of Kingfisher plc, a multinational home improvement company with 1100 stores across Europe giving a competitive edge to diy.com.
B&Q was founded by Richard Block and David Quayle who worked tirelessly six days a week to repay the debt in six months. The early struggles and hard work made the company turnover of about £1 million in just five years and within a decade of operating B&Q opened 26 stores across the United Kingdom.
In early stages, B&Q expanded its business with the development of HomeCentres and AutoCentres which lived shortly but gave exposure to the new line of business, DIY. The expansion in China and HongKong did not turn out well too and caused the closing of stores while shifting the whole focus on the UK and Ireland.
It was reported in 2007 that B&Q was the second largest producer of home improvement products in Europe and with over 100 warehouses, more than 20,000 employees, 359 shops in the UK and 8 in Ireland B&Q, the fourth largest in the world.
The 7 million and counting customer base has made B&Q the leading home and garden improving retailer in the UK. The online store of diy.com proved to be a game-changer it increased the chances of purchasing as 75% of the customers check the product on the website before buying it physically.
